The growing appeal of electric car sharing in Valencia

Tuesday, 15 March 2016

E:Sharing in Valencia is a commercial e car sharing offer, operated by MOVUS. It is designed to meet the mobility needs of companies and private users providing a high quality service.

During the pilot, the number of cars and users has significantly increased. Currently the fleet has 9 BEVs (Think City, Renault Fluence and Peugeot iOn) shared among 62 users.

Mauro Fiore, CEO of MOVUS, explains the problems and the opportunities that E:Sharing had to face starting since the beginning of eBRIDGE, in 2013.
“Our commitment to sustainable mobility -in particular electric mobility and car sharing- has been a founding principle of our company. We dealt with multiple factors, from the lack of an applicable regulatory framework to the general lack of awareness about e-mobility and car sharing.  Fortunately, thanks to projects like eBRIDGE, this situation is quickly changing and new market opportunities arise. We have made great effort to disseminate the benefits of electric mobility and the use of car sharing fleets. In our experience, doing business and encouraging a more sustainable mobility is possible. Innovative people and solutions are required to improve mobility in our cities and its sustainability.”

Manuel Pérez Bosch, Head of Section at the UHD (Hospital Home Care Unit, Virgen de los Lirios Hospital, Alcoy), shares his opinion about the E:Sharing service and how it helped change the doctors and nurses’ attitude to electric mobility.
“Since this unit’s creation in 1991, home visits have been made with employees’ private vehicles. Even though they received payment for mileage, sometimes this situation created certain uneasiness, especially in case of accident.
After the expansion of the UHD in 2002, the total mileage of the visits increased significantly. Consequently, the cost per vehicle generated enough demand to provide the employees with a suitable transport alternative.
The current mobility solution for employees, E: Sharing, involves (a) a commitment to improve our sustainability, and (b) other advantages of e-car sharing such as greater confidence in the use and access to vehicles, parking facilities, quiet and comfortable driving and the personal satisfaction of driving a non polluting vehicle.
Furthermore, the vehicles are charged during the night, so we also avoid having to refuel in the day. Finally, the identification of the fleet by official logos has increased general visibility of the service and has eliminated undue parking fines.
It should be noted that the range of the vehicles is too tight in some cases when we have to travel distances of over 42 km to reach the more remote areas or with complicated terrain like Muro de Alcoy, Ibi and Castalla (slopes from 350 to 750 meters).
This has been mitigated, at least partly, with a smooth driving of the vehicles.

From our point of view, the most important change is the employee universal acceptance of this new mobility offer. I would also like to emphasize the good service of the operator of the service, MOVUS, regarding the maintenance of the fleet and customer service. During 2015 the fleet performed a total of 12,546 home visits and only once a vehicle ran out of battery.
Our staff has adapted quickly and is pleased with the service. We hope this initiative serves as success story for other hospitals or companies aiming to introduce electric mobility solutions.”
